Apple is steadily gaining ground in its fight against Adobe’s notorious video and animation technology, Flash. It seems that almost every other day we hear another story of a major website that has decided to add support for HTML 5, the next major revision of HTML that is currently under development. Programmers and web designers are increasingly receiving requests from clients who want their websites to be compatible with the Flash-free iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, and now, 26% of Web video is ready for these devices (up from 10% a year ago).
This is obviously very good news for Apple. The faster HTML 5 is adopted, the less criticisms and complaints they are going to receive against their iDevices for not supporting Adobe’s technology. It’s also good news for the rest of us. Flash is very unreliable, it is the number one reason Macs crash. It also had one of the worst security records in 2009 (highlighted recently by Symantec). Also, have you ever watched your CPU usage while viewing a Flash video? It hogs your CPU like nothing else.
All the major web browsers are jumping on board too – Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome are leading the race with support already in place for most HTML 5 and CSS 3 features. Mozilla’s Firefox is catching up and surprisingly so is Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, the next major version (9) will add significant HTML 5 and CSS 3 support.
